Peru: US markets saturated with Mexican avocado
While Peru anticipated sending 50% of the available export to US markets, only a third (768 containers) was actually shipped. The surplus was diverted to Europe, where prices weren’t exactly soaring either.
José Antonio Gómez of Camposol, the number 1 exporter of Peruvian avocado, said that in spite of the low returns, Peru was forced to sell. Otherwise the surplus would have been devastating. “We are now hoping for Chile to open up as a market,” he says. “Japan and China are also options.” Still, Gómez has high hopes for the future, now that US markets have had a chance to taste the Peruvian avocado.
