Argentina: Worst cherry season in 4 years

This year the cherry harvest in Mendoza province in Argentina will decrease with an unprecedented 63% compared to last year, according to the Institute of Rural Development (IDR). With a suspected yield of 2,287 tons it will be the worst turnover in four years.

Engineer Mariana Ríos Vera explains the statistics. These are based on the performance of the Bing variety, a regular in the Mendoza region and a species representative of the cherry industry. “After a few successful years the Bing isn’t carrying as much fruit as we’re used to. This is due to a physiological process.”

Among other factors are the climate. The Valle de Uco experienced some severe frost. “A drop of 63% will affect everyone in the business. Everybody is concerned.”

Alberto Carletti, an industry representative, said about the consequences: “It is a serious problem. Investments are made on the prospects of a normal harvest. Now these costs will not be met.”
