Mexico to avoid strawberry plant imports from the US

With the goal to stop importing strawberry plants from the US and reducing production costs, the Mexican National Strawberry Council is promoting a project for the growing of Mexican plants. This was announced by the president of the State's Strawberry Council, Juan Manuel Garibay Villalobos, who said that the main objective is to avoid having to depend on foreign imports for the production of strawberries.

He explained that the payments being made for the right to use the US-imported plants is definitely very excessive, as special tariffs are paid due to patents.

He estimated that the latest season's increase stood between 100 and 1000%, just for the Festival variety.

To be able to reduce production costs and relieve producers from the effects of the recession, the possibility of producing Mexican varieties that convince local producers in terms of quality is, therefore, being studied.
