Mexico: Banana and plantain exports increase

The banana and plantain production in Soconusco, Mexico, has increased in recent years, thus increasing banana exports to the United States due to its high quality and demand.

With this, the export of this product, through private sector companies, is an average of 1,500 hectares in the international market.

Rubiel Velazquez Cardenas, director of agricultural development of Mazatán, explained that because of its quality, taste, sugar content and size, the banana has positioned itself as the number one and best of Chiapas, which is highly sought by national and international buyers.

"The producers that are in this location market their products through companies like Chiquita, Dole and Coreana, who take the bananas to the United States, Canada and part of the Mexican Republic," he said.

When asked about the sale of bananas to the "coyotes", he said there is concern that the local producers, continue with this practice, therefore, they will seek through agricultural encouragement, to approach farmers to find a direct market to break even with the intermediaries.
