The drought has impacted the productivity gained by almond growers in Almeria in the last harvest. The Union of Small Farmers (UPA) reports that performance has decreased in 40%. Francisca Iglesias, Secretary General of UPA-Almería says "while in previous seasons we have obtained an average of 250 grams of almonds per kilo, this year we get 150 grams, ie, reduced by 40% its performance compared to the previous harvest." The main reason stated in the Union of Small Farmers of Almería, has been the drought "it has endangered not only the entire production for much of the year, but also rainfed farms in parts of the province."
The forecasts in the agricultural organization had been improved as confirmed by Iglesias. "In August hopes of finishing with these results was almost gone." However, "the late rains in August that damaged the area of Levante, were beneficial for almond farms inside Almeria. Thus, recovering the production from the trees that survived and were about to die," Iglesias said.
