EU: Mexican lime market picking up

The European market for Mexican limes is picking up again, Pedro Rodrigues from San Gabriel UK, one of the biggest exporters of Mexican limes, says this is due to better quality and a drop in supply.

Last week the price of a box of Mexican limes was between 3.5 and 4 Euro, this has improved to around 5.50 this week. San Gabriel UK are importing around 9 containers of Mexican limes a week at the moment into Rotterdam. The company is responsible for 30% of limes shipped out of Mexico to Europe.

As for grapefruit, Pedro says there is some Turkish fruit around at the moment, but the Israeli and Cyprus grapefruit will arrive soon, with the volumes from Florida expected in a couple of weeks.

Grapefruit is selling for around 9 Euro a box just now, this a drop from last week's 15-16 Euro as volumes increase. Pedro expects the Florida grapefruit to command around 14-15 Euro per box due to good quality and the good reputation of the US fruit.
