Arias Cañete:

"The EU-Morocco agreement will have a very limited effect"

The minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias CaƱete, pointed out that he expects the new agreement between the European Union and Morocco to have a "very limited effect in the short and medium term" on European and Spanish products.

He said this yesterday afternoon at the Senate's Agriculture commission, also stressing the "opportunities" this protocol opens for the Spanish agri-food sector, as it liberalises Morocco's market for certain fruits and vegetables, cereals, meats, dairy or oils, among others.

The minister highlighted that the trade liberalization included in the agreement is not a full one, as some "very important" protection mechanisms, such as input prices and maximum quotas, remain for more vulnerable Spanish products.

Nevertheless, he underlined how necessary it is to ensure that these mechanisms "are working properly"; therefore, the Government "will spare no efforts" to enforce them.
