France wants PDO for 'fraises de Nîmes'

France has asked the European Commission to grant a protected designation of origin (PDO) for the 'Fraises de Nîmes'. It concerns early strawberry varieties Gariguette en Ciflorette. The geographical area of the 'Fraises de Nîmes' is the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The 'Plateau des Costières de Nîmes' is a sub-horizontal plateau ranging from 20 to 147 metres in height.

The area is further known for its strong winds, rain and amount of sunshine. Due to the latter, most of the crops ripen early. The strawberries in fact, ripen 15 days earlier than in other regions.
