Netherlands: “Over 800 ha. of Westland glass to disappear”

The Dutch district of Westland, known for its large concentration of greenhouses, is in peril of losing its chief source of income. Big horticultural companies are threatening to leave the area because there is no more room for proper expansion. This according to the industry’s major financer, the Rabobank.

CEO of Rabobank Westland, Fred van Heyningen, says an increasing amount of businesses prefer to expand their activities in other, more accessible regions of the country. The want to build “mega greenhouses”, not buy up smaller nurseries in the already crowded Westland district. Van Heyningen: “A lot of growers are nearing retirement. Because no one will buy their glass houses, they are just standing there, vacant.”
