Peru: A proper postharvest handling ensures grape export

All the efforts that were invested in the production of table grapes may collapse with a poor postharvest control, which could generate a large economic loss, thus the importance of proper management in this stage.

In that sense, horticulture specialist, Juan Pablo Zoffoli, indicated one of the big problems was that producers assume that by just having the crop, the task is accomplished. However, there is another major challenge, transportation; which will result in the product reaching international markets.

He noted that the post harvest period (ranging from harvesting to marketing) can last between 20 and 100 days, and it is at this stage where the main problems affecting grapes emerge.

"The causes that usually damage the vine are related to biotic like decay and abiotics like dehydration, and problems related to the cold chain," said the horticulture specialist.
