Nigeria continuing high volume tomato import

Nigeria imports over $74.3 million US worth of processed tomatoes annually despite local production. This is due to a lack of appropriate storage and processing facilities locally.

Peter Onwualu, director of Raw Materials Research and Development Council, said, "This trend may continue unless adequate domestic food processing and storage facilities that will meet the rising demands of such products in Nigeria are put in place," he said.

"Nigeria is the second largest producer of tomato in Africa, with total [acreage] at one million hectares, producing 1.7 million tonnes per year."
