Vicente Duart, from Anecoop

"Spain: 51,000 tonnes of "Ribera del Xuquer" persimmons expected for trade"

"For the current persimmon campaign we expect 60,000 tonnes to be harvested and a commercial volume of around 51,000 tonnes, all of them under the "Ribera del Xuquer" protected designation of origin," explains Vicente Duart, Anecoop's Programs Executive.

The variety commercialised by Anecoop is the Bright Red, included in the "Ribera del Xuquer" protected designation of origin and sold under the Bouquet brand. Hard persimmons are labelled as Persimon Bouquet and soft ones as Classic Bouquet.

All persimmon-related operations at Anecoop are centralised by Grupo Persimon, a business group created within Anecoop in the 2008-2009 campaign. 17 persimmon-producing cooperatives are part of it, all partnered with Anecoop.

The market share of persimmons appears to be growing strongly in Spain, so production is also on the rise.

"In just five years we have gone from 10,000 tonnes to 60,000, and prospects are for 80,000 tonnes to be reached in the next two years," explains Duart.

"Last year we marketed 41,000 tonnes, which means we would increase our commercial prospects this season by 20%."

Mr. Duart points out that this season the product is of an exceptional quality and that average sizes are better than last year, when they were excessively large.

"It is a product that offers long term business opportunities and is profitable for everyone involved in the production chain," he affirms.

"The group's main objective is to standardise product quality, control the production and have a single route to market, through Anecoop."
