Uruguay: In 2011, 2713 tons of blueberries were exported

According to a report by the Institute Uruguay XXI, in 2011 the volume of blueberry exports reached the record of 2,713 tons, equivalent to USD 16 million.

This production has made the blueberry the second most important fruit exported, with 17% of the total fruit exports of the country behind citrus.

The Uruguay XXI report sates that Uruguay's exports are concentrated in providing off season markets in the United States, Europe, Canada and to a lesser extent Asian ones. In the North American markets, the blueberry´s season for production covers eight months, from April to November. Uruguay's exports are concentrated in the months from October to December, especially in November.

The United States and the Netherlands are the two major export destinations for blueberries, with 29% of the total each. Followed by the UK with 16%, Spain with 9% and Canada with 6%.
