Italy: Eitan Kachel received a lifetime achievement award at the Tomato Excellent ceremony
Agronomist Eitan Kachel, who served as the sales manager for Hazera Genetics company in Italy for 27 years, was awarded a lifetime achievement prize for his contribution to the idea of growing greenhouse tomato varieties for picking and marketing in clusters, the initial realization of this concept in Sicily and Italy, and his contribution to the greenhouse tomato industry mainly in Sicily, while attaining significant economic and nutritional achievements.
The prize was awarded in the Tomato Excellent event, considered the sector's Oscar awards, in Italy's most important fruits and vegetables exhibition, MACFRUIT. Following the huge commercial success of Hazera Genetics' cluster tomatoes, cultivation of cluster varieties began at the School of Agriculture and by seed companies in Israel and overseas. The success in the growing and marketing of cluster tomatoes in Italy transformed Hazera Genetics from an unknown, almost anonymous company in Italy into a leading company of high repute, in addition to bringing the company revenues of millions of dollars from seed sales.
The total volume of sale of fresh cluster tomatoes has reached one billion dollars a year, and the presence of cluster tomatoes is now evident in many countries. The success of cluster cherry tomato grown in greenhouses in Italy has had significant impact on the increase of cherry tomato consumption in the world.
