According to the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), citrus exports this year will earn more than USD 14 million in foreign exchange and generate about 34,000 jobs in productive sectors of Colon, Comayagua, Yoro and Cortes in Honduras.
The deputy director of that agency under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Edgar Santamaria said the country produces 260,000 tons of citrus, of which 90,000 will go for processing, and 3000 containers will be exported.
"The export has not been limited nor affected, business profitability levels are on the rise with the entry of a new plant that comes to compete and improve prices," he added.
Among the main citrus markets for Honduras we have Guatemala, El Salvador, Germany, France and several Caribbean islands.
This sector will be favored with a recently signed agreement with SAG that includes training with international specialists in disease management.
The country has about 23,000 hectares planted with citrus, mostly business oriented.
