NZ: New Apple varieties for export
Apparently Koru was a chance seedling from Nelson, so its parentage is under discussion.
It's a blushy, attractive apple in appearance and is said to be sweeter than many New Zealand apples, so it should be popular in Asia and the US.
So far, 100 hectares have been planted.
And 200 hectares of Honey Crisp, which is also of American origin, have been planted, mainly in the South Island because it prefers cooler climates.
Honey Crisp is destined for the US in the off season there.
Some new varieties are being planted exclusively for export and so will not be seen on the shelves of domestic supermarkets for some time.
