Netherlands: “More people eat potato with peel”

Potato producer Jac van den Oord from Ammerzoden is one of those growers increasingly aware of today’s rapidly changing eating habits. “We do our best to accommodate those preferences,” says Leon van den Oord. “We are basically trying to become the country’s specialty specialist.”

Leon, the third generation to run the business, tells how the company has carved out a niche for itself, especially in the last 15 years. “We have chosen to work with varieties like Roseval, Truffe de Chine, La Ratte and Chérie. It’s true that moving into specialty’s doesn’t mean large volumes, but because of our tiny corner we are able to deliver stuff that nobody else has. Buyers know that. This month we have presented ourselves on Potato Europe to expand our international clientele.”

Still, Leon is trustful when it comes to the domestic market. “Our habits change, and diversify. More people eat the potato with the peel. But we are a nation of potato eaters and that will never change.”

“We, however, believe in quality, not quantity. We don’t want to saturate the market just because the product is in demand. We want to cater to people’s specific wishes, move along with the flow.”
