Spain: Export of fresh produce receives possible boost with PerfoTec

PerfoTec is a new wrapping technology that increases the freshness of fruit and vegetables. Micro-perforations in the wrapping material allow for longer storage and transport of fresh produce, possibly boosting the export industry.

Fresh produce needs oxygen to remain fresh, but the quantity and duration, of course, differs per product. PerfoTec has patented a technique that can easily determine which product needs which amount of oxygen, and when: the Fast Respiration Meter. An Online Laser Perforation System is involved to produce microscopic punctures in the packaging material, depending on the nature of the product.

The benefits are obvious: transport is cheaper, produce can travel longer and still arrives fresh as a daisy. To countries like Spain, this puts places like Russia and Asia on the map.

Ed Westerweele of PerfoTec in Spain names strawberries as one of the beneficiaries of the advanced technology. 85% of strawberries produced in Huelva are intended for export. The delicate fruits will now be able to reach far corners of the globe.

PerfoTec will attend Fruit Attraction on 24-26 October in Madrid.
