Netherlands: Organic sales up 12%
In spite of the economical crisis, organic sales are on the rise in the Netherlands for the tenth year in a row. Over the last decade, organic turnover has doubled and is now heading in the direction of 1 billion euro per year. In the wake of organic growth, sales of non-organic products that focus on single sustainable issues such as animal welfare or climate impact are also on the rise.
One of the Dutch companies that has contributed to the growth of the Dutch organic sector is Nature & More, a leading international trader in organic fruits and vegetables since 1990.
"We feel that the consumer is not just interested in organic, but also in ethical trade, water use, climate impact, soil degradation, biodiversity and all other aspects of sustainability" says CEO Volkert Engelsman. "Some conventional producers may be good at single sustainability issues, but organic still wins the sustainable decathlon."
