Spain: Cemar could close ten of its supermarkets

A few days back, Cemar informed the business committee about an employment regulation that will affect between 70 and 80 workers, as a result of the closure of 12 or 13 supermarkets (out of 33 that the company owns) in the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña. Cemar promised to deliver the documents to the representatives of the workers, when presented to the Commercial Court. The company hasn't yet to make clear to their 130 employees how many will lose their jobs. Some of them probably are in some of the ten stores that Cemar has in A Mariña.

Two are in Burela, and each of the remaining eight are in Barreiros, Mondoñedo, Ribadeo, A Pontenova, O Valadouro, O Vicedo, Viveiro and Xove. They are part of the 33 supermarkets that Cemar has, that is preparing the corresponding documentation in the Commercial Court that handles the bankruptcy proceeding which was recently presented. The main debt is with Covirán, an Andalusian cooperative with which the company signed an alliance earlier this year and was broken off in the summer, presumably due to differences in the interpretation of
agreements.

Union sources said that during the pre bankruptcy proceeding the agreement they tried to negotiate, did not flourish. Before yesterday, the committee informed the situation to the workers in the downtown area of the province. The lack of specific data triggered speculations among the workers, who were mostly women. Another
assembly is to be held in the south of Lugo, while in A Mariña, given the dispersion, union delegates are expected to visit the work centers.

If Cemar keeps their promise, information on the termination of contracts and closure of stores may be available today for workers, who will receive it through their union representatives.

The company owes two extra payments and half the salary of August. Cemar, according to the offical receiver, delivered the money to pay half of September´s payroll. When the company presents the documentation of the regulation of
employment, the Commercial Court will initiate consultations, within a maximum term of 30 days.
