Chilean cherry exports are expected to increase by 11%, reaching 78,000 tons during the 2012-2013 season, according to the latest estimates published by iQonsulting.
The outcome represents a new increase versus the 71,000 tons sent during the 2011/12 season, which in turn, represented a 23% increase compared with the 2010-2011 season, according to statements by the Executive Director of iQonsulting, Isabel Quiroz to Asiafruit.
iQonsulting expects exports to Asia to grow again this season, as a result of the synchronization of later dates of the Chinese New Year, celebration that will give suppliers more time to plan their shipments.
While shipments to Asia are increasing, the agency pointed out that the North American market will receive a more stable volume of cherries from Chile.
Meanwhile in Europe there will be a decrease in arrivals due to the economic crisis in the region, said the consulting entity.
Chile is the main exporter of cherries in the Southern Hemisphere, it is responsible for 91% of total cherry exports in the region.
Asia remains the largest export market for Chilean cherries, followed by North America. While Europe and Latin America represent the two other major destinations.
