Assesment from CEPA on Italian potato market

The CEPA - Italian Documentation Center of the Potato- informs that from an analysis of the potato production in Italy shows a decline in the harvest this year compared to the previous season, with a generally good quality of the product.

The production scenario that is emerging has already affected the Italian potato market: quotations at the farm remain higher than those of last year. The average price for a good quality potato increased in some areas of Italy, about 50% compared to the same period of 2011 and indicators in Italy and Europe suggest that the upward trend will be maintained in the coming months in all links of the supply chain.

Potato sales in the month of September recorded a regular pattern in wholesale and retail markets of the peninsula. There were also promotional activities by different groups of retailers. Retail prices tend to be stable, at around 1.00 Euro / kg.
