Jac Oomen, Oomen Agro:

"Netherlands: "Hopeful start for the onion season"

There is a lot of demand for onions at the moment. "Both Africa and Asia has good demand and onions are also being sent to countries like Brazil," says Jac Oomen. "Personally, I see it as a missed opportunity that there are export limitations in Indonesia. There are good supply opportunities there for Dutch onions, considering the market is experiencing shortages."

Oomen Agro stores, sorts and packages onions for customers across the entire world. The company was started in 2000 and came from an arable farming company from Jac Oomen. "The quality of the Dutch onion is fortunately many times better than last year. That is good too, because this makes it possible to distinguish ourselves. There are some noticeable differences in quality, between the early and late plots, but the first shipments were well received at their far away destinations."

The bale price is currently around 16.5 to 18 Euro. Oomen is feeling positive about the market situation for the coming weeks. "I think that we will even see a plus sign if exporters compete a little less."
