Netherlands: Low aftergrowth decreases potato crop.

The VTA, a Dutch union for farmers and growers, sampled the potato crop last month. This preliminary assessment has been performed since 2001 and always takes place in the same time of the year. Samples are taken from several locations throughout the country. Last month’s results were based on a large amount of samples taken from different VTA members.

VTA samples showed that there is a low after growth this year, namely 3-4 tons per ha. The number is, in fact, one of the lowest in years.

The tests also show that the dispersion of starch content (underwater weight) is big, around 480. The low growth, in combination with a decrease in range, will lead to a reduced crop this year.
