Malaysia: Man with 'jackfruit' marijuana nabbed

An unemployed man has devised a new way to transport marijuana leaves without being noticed — by packing them tightly to resemble jackfruit. His ruse was exposed when he was caught transporting 28kg of ganja, with a street value of RM84,000, in packs resembling the fruit on Tuesday.

The man in his 50s was apprehended by police while carrying the drugs in 23 packs of "jackfruit" in a gunny sack in the boot of his Proton Persona.

The "jackfruit", some as big as a rugby ball, were wrapped with paper and coated with brown-coloured box sealing tape which could be mistaken for the tropical fruits from afar.

Police, acting on a tip-off, followed the suspect who was on his way to town before intercepting his car near Bukit Gedung in Bayan Baru at about 3.30pm.

Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department head Supt S. Batumalai said this was the first time he had seen drugs packed in such a manner.

"Usually, the processed version of drugs are packed in small, rectangular bags. We believe the suspect must have been in a hurry when he packed them," he said.
