Tucumán began its blueberries campaign with the start of direct flights from the international airport Benjamin Matienzo to Miami's International Airport, in the United States. Yesterday morning the sixth export season started with flights with 52 tons of fruit. For this campaign around 70 flights and the arrival of three airlines are expected.
The sector assures a fruitful campaign. Furthermore, in the airport the construction of a cold chamber is in progress, with an investment of $ 7 million in funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation to begin operating in 2013. It is noteworthy to mention that in 2011 59 flights were made and in direct flights from Tucuman to the United States 2,850 tons were exported.
The airport of the province of Tucumán is the second cargo airport of Argentina. "This year we had few frosts, that have been short and of low intensity," said Luis D'Andrea, president of the Association of Blueberries Producers of Tucumán (Apratuc), who clarified that there are no reported damage to crops due to weather. "The drought does not affect us, since all fields are irrigated by drip of high efficiency," he said.
