photo report open days Nickerson-Zwaan, Vilmorin & Clause

New onion varieties at Nickerson-Zwaan

During the open ground vegetable days in Dirkshorn, Netherlands, the breeding collective Nickerson-Zwaan, Clause and Vilmorin presented their complete assortment again. Besides the trusted varieties, there were also a striking amount of new developments evident. Marion Vissers introduced me to the most important new arrivals. A few new onion varieties stood out.

The yellow onions Dormo and Centro have proven themselves in past years, but mainly during bad weather conditions of last year the two showed themselves to have a good endurance. This has created an increasing demand for the varieties, also because they are good for storage.

Santero is such a striking new comer, which due to its mildew resistance, supplemented by the characteristics of Dormo and Centro, creates a strong base for organic growers. Obviously it meets Nickerson's credo: high yield and strong storage.
