"Leon van Meir: "Everybody can earn something at the moment"

"Smaller harvest India opportunities for Dutch onion export"

At the moment the mood in the onion market is good. According to Leon van Meir of the onion wholesaler of the same name in Steenbergen, the Netherlands, the price is at a reasonable level (price per bale 16 Euro) and everybody in the chain can earn something at the moment. "Demand for onions is good. India has a smaller harvest and as a result more Dutch onions go to the traditional export countries of India."

Van Meir do not export themselves, but supply onions directly to ten small exporters, who supply the whole world. About 100 growers are part of the onion pool of Van Meir. Leon expects that the market will remain reasonably stable during the coming weeks. "Perhaps there may be a small increase in the price per bale, but that I do not expect immediately."

"Harvests are good everywhere and we will have to export a lot of onions. If demand remains like this, then that is possible, but it still has to happen. They remain onions and more than once the market has surprised us. At the moment the quality of the onions is good, but in general the earliest parcels give the best onions. These suffered less because of weather conditions and stress and were harvested under the best conditions. The later parcels still have to prove themselves.
