First apple varieties now available to consumers

Canada: BC Tree Fruits announces start of apple season

The orchards lining the sunny Okanagan are preparing for the BC Apple season. Harvest is in full swing and the expected size of BC Tree Fruits apple crop this year is an estimated 2.8 million cartons.

Consumers are already seeing Royal Gala, McIntosh, and Sunrise apples in the their local grocery stores. Spartan, Ambrosia, Golden Delicious, and Honeycrisp varieties will be available early October while Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji and Pink Lady apples will be available late October and early November.

With early season weather challenges plaguing apple growers across Eastern Canada, in many cases wiping out full crops there is an expected increase in demand for the already popular BC apples.

BC Tree Fruits Apple Season will peak in February 2013 with the celebration of National Apple Month. A cross-Canada contest will be held in celebration of apple month along with sampling and consumer events across Western Canada. “We are excited to have a healthy apple season ahead of us and share our Growers products with fruit fans across Canada,” states Chris Pollock, Marketing Manager for BC Tree Fruits. Pollock adds, “Weather and growing conditions have been favorable, unlike a number of other apple producing regions. We have harvested apples that have a good size, good volume and good coloring.”

Consumers across Canada and select USA and International countries can find apples with the familiar BC Tree Fruits leaf sticker throughout the 2012-2013 apple season.
