Netherlands: Kloosterboer chooses Nijssen's innovative cooling system

In the coming months, Nijssen Koeling BV will realise a sustainable and innovative refrigeration and freezing system with heat recovery for the expansion of Kloosterboer's Delta Terminal. The cooling and freezer cells can be switched over automatically. The current, fully automated cold storage at the Rotterdam Maasvlakte, is dimensioned for preservation of large stocks. As customers increasingly indicate they also want to store smaller stocks, both refrigerated and frozen, Kloosterboer has decided to expand with cooling and freezer rooms for smaller batches. The new building has a floor area of approximately 9,600 m2 and offers the possibility to store 7,650 pallets in refrigerated or freezer storage.

Automatic switching

The new installation uses the natural refrigerants ammonia and CO2. With 3 large freezers and 5 large cooling and freezer cells, all with a temperature range between -/-25 ° C and + / +12 ° C, Kloosterboer can respond more flexibly to the customers' wishes. Unique to the system is that the cooling and freezer cells can be switched automatically.

Energy efficient

Kloosterboer wants to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20 percent within 5 years through innovative logistics solutions and energy efficient installations, amongst others. Nijssen uses the latest technology to reduce energy consumption of the new system as much as possible. For instance, the evaporating condensers and air cooled condensers are provided with with energy-efficient fans with frequency control. The heat from the cooling system is partly reused to heat the expedition rooms and freezers, to heat the offices, and for defrosting air coolers.

Advanced control

The Freezemaster© control software developed by Nijssen includes the advanced Nijssen Power Saving system, realizing further energy savings of about 15% while managing the system.

Working according to BREEAM

The installation meets the requirements for a government grant through the Energy Investment Scheme. Upon completion, Kloosterboer strives to obtain the BREEAM-certificate, the most important and most widely used sustainability label for buildings in the world. Mark Paauw, director of Nijssen Koeling BV: "We are pleased with the confidence Kloosterboer has in us, and we look forward to cooperating with them."
