Mexico: Lemon export expected to rise in winter

Mexico’s citrus sector is preparing for a 100% increase of lemon production in the coming season. This means that about 3,000 tons a day will be produced. The price will likely be around 8 pesos, three times the current amount. In particular the Michoacán lemon will be widely available. This according to el Sistema Producto Limón Mexicano de Michoacán (Siprolimex).

Today, the price per kilo lies between 2 and 2.5 pesos. With the price tripling in the next few months, producers are expecting to maintain 22,000 jobs in the Apatzingan Valley.

Sergio Ramírez Castañeda, chairman of el Sistema Producto Limón, hopes the anticipated price of 8 pesos per kilogram will be feasible next month, as the revenue is needed to bring local economy back on track.

The Michoacán citrus crop has its peak between December and January, but due to limited production in surrounding areas like Colima and Oaxaca (because of the climate), the prices for Michoacán lemons start going up as early as October.

Ramírez Castañeda says that the lack of supply in surrounding states cause a positive boom in the Apatzingán Valley region, as Michoacán is one of the few to meet citrus demands in these months.
