Just recently, Americans only consumed avocado in guacamole. But now, the use of this food is expanding and is booming in the U.S., as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Sales in U.S. supermarkets have increased considerably, at the same time its use expanded to sandwiches, salads and a variety of dishes in restaurants.
In the minds of consumers, the avocado has gone from being the exotic fatty food to a daily source of healthy fat, so its consumption has been favored by the care that people give now to their diet and health.
Many restaurant chains have included the avocado on their menus, several athletes have stated it is basic in breakfast, or many chefs use it to add a touch of luxury to their dishes.
Both fast food chains as modern restaurants seek to incorporate it into their dishes, and not only in guacamole.
Some food manufacturers have chosen to market new products like packaged avocado or promote it as nature`s mayonnaise to boost consumption of this exotic fruit.
Thus, avocado sales in 2011 amounted to USD 2,900 million, exceeding those in 2010 by 11%. In 2012 avocado consumption rose 30% in the first half, compared to the previous year.
