The Brazilian melon supply will be limited for the next three weeks, according to Rolf Weber of Global Producers from Venlo. "At the moment there are still Cantaloupes from Italy and water melons from Spain. The market isn't great, but the prices are at acceptable levels. The sales of yellow melons is going well, but there are a few too many large sizes on the market. The sales of Galia's is also going well, with acceptable prices."
"We have to wait and see how the sales will go in the next nine weeks, until the beginning of December. This mainly depends on the volumes and prices of other fruits, such as apples, pears, bananas and pineapple. At the moment those prices are reasonable and this is benefiting the sales of melons. Consumers are buying more price consciously," continues Rolf. "The quality of the melons is good and we won't need to worry about quality problems in the coming weeks."
Global Producers grows and sells melons themselves and supplies them mainly to German, Scandinavian and Austrian supermarkets. What is notable according to Rolf is the specific preference for a certain variety per region in Germany. In South Germany and Austria the Cantaloupe is preferred and in Central and North Germany more Galia's are consumed."
