Spain number one in sustainable agriculture

For the fourth year in a row, Spain, out of all EU countries, ranks number one when it comes to the amount of hectare dedicated to sustainable agriculture. Almost all of Spain’s autonomous communities register a growth in the designated acreage.

Of the communities Andalusia has the highest amount of ecological farmlands (967 ha), followed by Catalonia (658), the Comunidad Valenciana (455), Murcia (238) and Castilla-La Mancha (232). The largest increase was on the Canary Islands, with 34.94%, Andalusia with 21.79%, The Baleares with 14.86%, and the Comunidad Valenciana with 14,02%.

2011 saw a large increase of banana cultivation, with a growth of 144.49%. Root vegetables are up with 50.76%. Other major sectors are fruit and citrus.
