Photo report of visit to Westland and onion sector
Chinese trade mission visit Dutch fruit and vegetable sector
This week on the initiative of Frugi Venta in cooperation with GroentenFruit Bureau and Greenport Holland International an incoming trade mission has been organised with a Chinese delegation of 10 representatives of supermarkets (amongst which Tesco and Carrefour). Two weeks ago various Chinese officials visited the Dutch fruit and vegetable sector, now the first delegation of buyers from China has arrived.
At Red Star Trading
Frugi Venta has been involved for a number of years in cooperation with the ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, to gain permission to enter the Chinese market. The docket on Conference-pears is from 2008 and in the meantime dockets on onions, peppers, tomatoes and apples have been opened.
TomatoWorld
Monday 17 September the Chinese delegation, led by Victor Phaff, visited Westland with visits to Berg Peppers, Red Star Trading, Van Rijn and TomatoWorld.
Kloosterboer
On Monday the Chinese delegation had a Meet & Greet with the Dutch onion exporters. First of all the delegation visited a sorting and packing company Monie, after which it went to Kloosterboer to view the loading and quality control of the onions which were ready for transport. Finally the group visited Proefboerderij de Rusthoeve, where a presentation was organised about cultivation research by Leen van Marion (UIKC) followed by a guided tour with a visit to the test field and a networking drink.
The onion sector reacted with enthusiasm to this Meet & Greet with the Chinese delegation and amongst others the exporters Mulder Onions, Marbo, Wiskerke, Van Liere, Agro Centre Holland, TOP Onions and Dex Import and seed improvement company De Groot & Slot were present. The enormous interest in China is clear, despite the fact that the export of onions from the Netherlands is not possible. The Chinese, themselves being the largest onion producing country in the world, showed interest in trade possibilities and prices. The exporters present received all opportunities to meet the Chinese delegation.
Gijsbrecht Gunter (Frugi Venta / SAU / Promotion Commission) looks back at an interesting day. "I am even more convinced that there are enormous opportunities in China. This opinion was unanimously accepted by both the Dutch exporters and by the Chinese retailers and importers. The cooperation in the sector is increasing and is becoming firmer all the time. A warm tribute to onion growing in Holland. Click here for the presentation from Gijsbrechtlik
On Tuesday the Chinese delegation visited the Betuwe. On this 'fruit day' visits were planned at Fruitmasters, Albert Heijn and Hanos.
