"Ecuador: "Banana production is not what it could be"
A representative of Holachica explained that the names are Spanish language phrases in common use in Latin America.
"Holachica you hear all the time here, it means "hello girl," which is why the brand image is of a caricature of a little girl. Como esta literally means "how are you?" and is used all the time as a greeting. Again we use a caricature for the brand, this time of a young boy.
She says there are a few issues affecting the industry right now, for example, she says, production is not what it could be.
"Production in Ecuador is very low right now and the quality is poor. This is because of the Sigatoka disease. We have to be very selective.
"The market conditions are also not good. For example, for us, (in week 36) an 18kg box of green bananas, costs, let's say $7. To this you must add freight and other costs, plus taxes and you're looking at $17, for a box of fruit that will only fetch around $13 in Europe."
The company is still very much looking to the future, however and are looking at new ways to promote themselves, including a new style box for the merchandise.
"It looks excellent," She says. "It is very colourful and has 3D imagery and we are sure it will be a hit with customers."
