Peru: Banana and plantain exports have grown 30% so far this year

Banana exports in Peru have benefited from improvements in technology and the trend in the consumption of healthy and organic products. Thus, for 2012 shipments will total USD 91.6 million (138,000 MT), representing a growth of 30%, according to estimates by Maximixe. This result could be sustained thanks to the U.S. and European demand, that would take export prices to USD 664.2 per MT (2.1% advance).

For 2013 shipments are expected to grow by 24.8%, reaching USD 114.3 million, thanks to the positioning of organic bananas in the Japanese and Korean diet, which displaced other fruits such as apples and oranges, and with the entry into force of the FTA with the European Union.

In the first semester organic banana and plantain exports totaled USD 41.2 million (60,200 MT), showing an improvement of 21.5%. This outcome was due to increased purchases from Belgium (53.9%), Netherlands (21.6%) and the U.S. (16.2%). Meanwhile, export prices recorded a rise of 6.8% year on year, reaching USD 683.2 per MT.
