Spain: “Increased fruit theft due to crisis”

The current financial crisis has led to increased theft in the fruit sector, according to Antonio Sánchez González, president of the The Counsel of Designation of Origin of the cherimoya. He has asked for Government assistance in the matter.

In the Counsel’s press release Sánchez states that “it started shortly before the cherimoya campaign. For about three weeks now, large quantities of cherimoyas, mangos and avocados have been stolen. There has even been a robbery, where people got hurt.”

The Counsel calls on several authorities to coordinate an effort to put an end to this problem.

“We want this taken care of,” says Sánchez. “Not just the thefts themselves, but the illegal trade of fruit following the crimes. It doesn’t just hurt the growers, it hurts the reputation of the entire industry.”
