A Designation of Origin for the wild asparagus from Huétor Tájar (Granada) has led to a commercial campaign for canned asparagus on German, Danish and Polish markets. The Designation of Origin is part of a regulatory classification system used primarily for Spanish wines, but also for other foodstuffs like cheese, condiments, honey and meat.
Chairman of the Designation of Origin, Antonio Zamora, stated that the production of the wild asparagus has increased with 195,000 kilos. The vegetable is cultivated in four primary regions in la Vega del Genil: Loja, Huétor Tájar, Salar, Moraleda de Zafayona and Villanueva Mesía. The industry employs over 300 labourers. Harvest campaigns start in Spring and end with the June heat.
To promote the benefits of the wild asparagus, the Counsel for Asparagus Regulation (Consejo Regulador del Espárrago) has given away over 5000 portions to visitors of the Huétor Tájar festivities.
