Ecuador: Banana prices cause unrest

In spite of successful fumigation campaigns against diseases on banana plantations, growers are still worried about the low prices. According to Orenses, the union of banana producers, the price per crate will likely drop below the agreed rates. Moreover, the union says, the established quota is not respected and this causes false competition.

Orenses states it’s not taken seriously by authorities, and insists on an evaluation leading to viable solutions for the sector. Additionally, the union asks President Rafael Correa to take action. Orenses wants the market to stabilize, so producers don’t have to depend on meagre prices.
