"Netherlands: Volante:"More shoots, but easy to cultivate"

Horticultural company Tuindershoek in IJsselmuiden grows the Volante pepper variety on a 3 stem system on 7.2 ha. We are closely monitoring the growing process throughout the year. At the time of the last update in the Enza seeds Pepper News of July, harvest came to at least 15 kilo. How is the situation at the moment?

Interested fellow growers had a look around at Tuindershoek in week 35. Volante offers a lively, yet slender crop with many fruits at a ripe green and colouring stage. It was obvious that the energy demand of these fruits was past its peak. Due to this, the plant is able to add one final considerable amount of new growth in week 36 and 37. The first little fruits were already there, but they were just too small to count.

The fruits that had been harvested in week 35, had first appeared 42 days before, and the quality was very good. Cumulatively, 2% fell into class 2. The coarseness of the fruits is also satisfactory. All year round, the quality of the fruits has been good. Even in week 35, there hadn't been any 2-compartment fruits in the crops. During the whole year, 75% of the fruits fell into the 80-100 mm category (>185 gram), and 10% above that. At the end of week 34, around 21 kg/m2 had been harvested.

Paul Kaashoek of Tuindershoek in PepperNews: "It is very important to work according to growth. It worked very well in the last growing season. We had near constant heating for almost the entire year, and we tried to smooth out the peaks to a maximum of 25°C. The coating that we applied from week 19 to 34 helped us with that. We feel that, in the end, the growing process hasn't been any more laborious than with other varieties. Volante does generate more shoots, but it is a crop that is easy to cultivate. The plant material is very even as well, and it hardly needed to be looked over."
