European apple shortfall made up by Poland

The bad weather experienced by Europe so far this year, with temperatures below zero in the spring and a lot of rain over the summer, will have consequences for the upcoming apple and pear harvests.

In Western Europe, the apple harvest is likely to be 25-30% lower than last year. However, this shortfall will be made up by Poland as it produces more apples than the whole of Western Europe combined thanks to a larger cultivation area. Overall, it is expected that the entire northern hemisphere will have a weaker year for apples than last year. This could change: the season has not started yet, so with the right weather conditions harvests could still be better than expected.

The conference pear harvest is expected to be 10% lower than last year. Consumers are unlikely to notice a lack of availability thanks to the large production areas. However, consumer prices are expected to rise from the low of last year.

foodcareplus has years of experience with the reefer shipment of fruit to destinations across the world and expects a stable growth in the sea transport of both apples and pears compared to last year.
