Prospects show a harvest of 6,294,000 tons in Mexican oranges, lemons and grapefruit for the 2011-2012 season.
Adrian Ensignia Camacho, general manager of the Consejo Citrícola Mexicano (the Counsel of Mexican Citrus Fruits), said this number is a drop of 17.4% compared to last season. According to estimations by the US Department of Agriculture Mexico was one of the largest suppliers of citrus fruits last year, the largest, in fact, when it came to the lemon.
Ensignia Camacho states that Mexico’s citrus industry now has a priority status, and that delegates of the country’s 19 states will convene on 19 September in Mexico City. Other members of the Counsel, like distributors and packers, are invited as well. The Consejo Citrícola Mexicano consists of representatives from states like Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Yucatán, Puebla, Baja California Sur, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Veracruz en Puebla.
