Peruvian mangoes to South Korea

The Peruvian Association of Mango Exporters (APEM) announced that between November 2013 and March 2014 the first mango shipments will leave for South Korea after the protocol allowing the fruit in that market is approved.

The president of the association, Juan Rivera, informed that the Korean Minister of Agriculture could finish next December with the review of the Pest Risk Analysis presented by the National Agricultural Health Service, after which the protocol will be set up.

"Not long ago we had a meeting with representatives from Senasa and the Korean Ministry of Agriculture and it seems that the Korean market will soon open for us," said Rivera.

The Korean market does not demand large amounts, but definitely good quality, so they expect to export 100 tonnes of mangoes during the first year to get a presence in the country.

"In that country they consume around 4,000 tonnes of imports per year, besides what they produce. In the case of mangoes, each exporting country ships in different seasons, so we would only compete with Ecuador if they also came into the market," affirmed Juan Rivera.
