Tucuman

Open doors in Asia for Argentinian lemons

Tucuman's citrus sector had a strong presence at the Asia Fruit Logistica fair.

"The fair was an excellent opportunity for Tucuman firms, because while Europe and the United States are feeling the effects of the recession, the Asian market continues to grow. It was very important for the Tucuman firms that came to China, as it helped them to create and maintain commercial relationships with serious partners pursuing to grow along with them." Virginia Ávila, from the Exports Promotion Area at IDEP, coordinated the Tucuman delegation at this, the most important fruit fair in the Asian continent.

For the fourth year running, a group of Tucuman firms, supported by IDEP (Tucuman's Productive Development Institute) participated in Asia Fruit Logistica. The event, which took place last week in Hong Kong, China, was attended by companies from 60 countries all over the world and helped consolidate the presence of Tucuman products in the Asian market. Tucuman was Argentina's largest representative. At the 90 square metre surface there were companies such as San Miguel, Citromax, Citrusvil, FGF Trapani and Zamora Citrus from the lemon sector, and All Lemon group, Expofresh and Kingberry from the cranberry sector.

"Since the fair first started, five years ago, we have always participated independently. This is the first time that we do it as a group of Tucuman firms, led by IDEP along with ExportAr foundation. We continue to work on expanding ourselves even more in this market. We have invested lots of time and money to conquer the Asian market and we are not going to give up. The industry is still committed to its goal of shipping 25% of the national production to Asia," explained Alejandro Moralejo, one of San Miguel's dealers.

This year there were more Argentinian firms exporting to Asia. Asia is the biggest target for Argentinian citrus, which continues to consolidate and develop," said Carlos Bertolotti, from Citromax. Besides lemons, this firm also managed to ship Tucuman cranberries to Asia, with 2,000 tonnes from their own production. San Miguel and Citromax have set up important promotions in Asia during the last few years.

"This is the first time that we participate in this fair, and we do it motivated, because IDEP makes us feel supported in our attempt to enter the Asian market. Asia Fruit Logistica is a fair that not only allows you to sell in Hong Kong, but it also offers us an excellent opportunity to come into contact with Middle East firms and other Asian countries. It gives us great possibilities to expand our markets," said Juan Zamora, from Zamora Citrus.
