Tough competition is brewing among several German retailers. One of the more prominent ones, Aldi, is fast losing terrain, according to German financial magazine Wirtschafstwoche. Its main competitors, Penny and Lidl, have shown more progress in the first half of 2012.
Market research organisation GfK announced that Penny’s turnover has increased with 5% since the start of this year. Lidl did good business as well, with a 2.2% increase in revenue. Both of them did better than Aldi Süd, which saw a 1.3% rise. At Aldi Nord, food sales even dropped, with 0.3%.
Penny’s revival has weakened a bit in the last two months, as the increase was stated to be 7% in May.
Retailer Aldi, with Aldi Süd (2500 stores) and Aldi Nord (1800 stores), is still the largest discounter in Germany. Second place goes to Netto, with over 4000 stores.
