Lower Saxony largest strawberry region in Germany

According to data by the German Bureau of Statistics, about 13,488 ha of strawberries was cultivated in 2011. Of the regions dedicated to the crop, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony are the largest. The range of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), a state situated in north-western Germany, amounts to 23.4% of the German total; the one in North Rhine-Westphalia amounts to 18.6%.

The total output of strawberry crop last year was 145,680 tons. Over 26% of that total came from Lower Saxony, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia with 21.6%, Baden-Württemberg with 19.7% and Bavaria with 10.1%. Saxony’s range has tripled since 1997: it went from 955 ha to 3,156 ha in 2011.

The yield per hectare has also increased. In 1997 this came to 8.6 tons per ha, in 2011 12.1 tons could be harvested per hectare. Peak years, like 2007, even saw a revenue of 15.6 tons per ha.

In total, Lower Saxony produced 38,211.60 tons of strawberries in the past year.
