Nunhems strengthens Canadian collaboration

Nunhems, the vegetable seed business of Bayer CropScience, wishes to expand its efforts in the Canadian market for cucumber, lettuce and tomato seeds, and further strengthen its international image as a greenhouse vegetable seeds specialist. In order to tighten the direct relationships with customers and partners in Canada, the sales structure of Nunhems will change per October 1, 2012.

Nunhems has been represented in Canada for its protected crops range by Growers Consulting, Inc. for many years. This business agreement will come to an end on September 30, 2012. On October 1, 2012, Nunhems will begin selling cucumber seeds directly to plant raisers and greenhouse cucumber growers in all areas of Canada.

For cucumber winter and spring crops, Nunhems is introducing a new variety, Cyrus. Cyrus has already been tested in Canada by several growers for two years. They were very satisfied with the nice fruit quality and the good production.

In addition to cucumber, Nunhems has a full line of greenhouse Lettuce varieties. Since Growers Consulting was not a lettuce distributor, there are no changes in the distribution. Greenhouse lettuce is already sold mostly direct to key customers.

This year, Nunhems also started trials of a new tomato program for high-tech greenhouse production. Trials include several varieties of tomatoes on the vine with an average fruit weight of 150 gram, and also cherry on the vine varieties. The cherry tomatoes weigh around 12 gram and have a deep red color. With a Brix level of 10, they score very well on taste. The performance of the Nunhems TOV and cherry tomato trial varieties is competitive with leading varieties in these segments in terms of production, taste and shelf life.
