Valencia’s citrus sector will deliver oranges and mandarins of outstanding quality this season, and the sales on foreign markets will skyrocket. At least according to Maritina Hernández, advisor on the Counsel of Agriculture (Conselleria de Agricultura), chairman of Anecoop Juan Safont, and chairman of AVA, Cristóbal Aguado. They made these statements in a meeting concerning the coming citrus campaign this week.
“We would like to see a sales campaign that underlines quality and food safety, so that we can reach all foreign markets, including the US,” states Hernández. The good state of the Valencian citrus is partly due to loans by the Generalitat Valenciana, which were deemed necessary during a period of freezing temperatures. The Generalitat Valenciana is the name covering the different self-government institutions under which the Spanish autonomous community of Valencia is politically organised.
Maritina Hernández goes on to say that Valencia’s produce is very suitable for foreign markets: “One of the sustaining qualities of our crop is the fact that it’s free of contagions. We have managed to ward off harmful insects and our campaigns against all kinds of infections have proved to be very effective.”
Cristóbal Aguado concurs; “The prospects are good. We have complete faith in the outstanding quality of our products.” Aguado assures, however, that the sector will remain vigilant and responsible.
