Bolivia seeking alternative markets for their bananas

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Hugo Vásquez, informed yesterday that a search for alternative markets is underway for bananas from the Cochabamba region.

"We are working on finding alternative markets to avoid any possible future risks," he said.

He informed that documents have been posted to various nations, including Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Spain, giving details about the product's phytosanitary conditions.

He said that it is essential to look for new international markets for the sale of bananas, as this product cannot only depend on one market, in this case Argentina, which is enforcing restrictive commercial policies.

In this sense, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development also informed that parallel negotiations are taking place with Argentina to get them to lift the restrictions they are imposing on Bolivian bananas.

He said that dialogue with Argentinian authorities on this issue is going well, but some details still need to be discussed.
